Why Posidonia?

The Background

Working Posidonia Diagrams_edited_edited

Historically Cyprus has not adhered to the legislation in terms of disposal of waste products, but rather have dumped the seagrass in landfills and illegal dumping sites.

Article 15 is amended by establishing that (1) every waste holder and any waste producer shall:

(a) carry out the recovery and disposal of waste or

(b) to assign the recovery and disposal of such waste to a trader or a person who carries out waste treatment operations or

(c) ensure, through an arrangement with a public organization or individual involved in waste collection, recovery and disposal such waste in accordance with the provisions of articles 9 and 10.

Posidonia Compost offers a simple solution to this problem, by utilising otherwise discarded sea grass to create high quality compost that benefits Cyprus broadly, and farmers specifically.

How does Posidonia benefit Cyprus?

The creation and utilisation of Posidonia sea grass benefits Cyprus in the following ways:

  • Stimulates the local economy

  • Advances Rural Development

  • Improves the quality of the soil on farmlands

  • Reduces reliance on imports of industrial fertilisers

  • Increases export earning

  • Improves adherence to EU Legislation

Some Quick Facts

  • In 2021, Cyprus imported $42M in fertilisers

  • Cyprus is the108th largest importer of fertilisers. Cyprus population size ranks 158th

  • In 2020, the industrial fertiliser consumption for Cyprus was 162.7 kilograms per hectare

  • Cyprus’ soils have small water infiltration rates and poor soil structure, highly vulnerable to wind and water erosion and effects of climate change

  • By the year 2024, the compost market is projected to attain a valuation of approximately $9.2 billion, with a forecasted compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.8% from 2019 to 2024

  • Posidonia Compost has 40 000 tons per annum production capacity, reducing the need for imported fertiliser

  • Posidonia Compost uses a peat free, non-invasive production process

  • We offer award winning organic compost (Posidonia® sea grass organic compost) that promotes soil regeneration and moisture retention

  • With our production capacity of 40 000 tons per annum, we can contribute to national income from compost exports
